EFTA Nations, Vietnam Continue Free Trade Talks
01/06/2015 64Negotiators from the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) nations – Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Iceland – and Vietnam recently met for a 12th round of free trade talks.
Discussions were held in Oslo from May 26-29. Working groups addressed trade in goods; trade facilitation; rules of origin; trade remedies; technical barriers to trade; cooperation and capacity building; sustainable development; intellectual property rights; investment and government procurement; and legal and institutional provisions. A working group on trade in services will meet during a separate session in the coming weeks.
A detailed program of follow-up work was agreed by delegates in preparation for the next round of talks, due to take place in Vietnam in October.
Negotiations toward a FTA began in May 2012. A joint EFTA-Vietnam study finalized in February 2011 concluded that there was significant potential for further developing trade and investment relations.
Total merchandise trade between the EFTA and Vietnam reached USD2.17bn in 2014, up nearly 20 percent on the previous year.
