US postpones FTA negotiations with EU
07/10/2013 51The partial US government shutdown has forced a delay in negotiations on a free trade deal with the European Union.
EU officials said on Friday that US government representatives said they will not be able to travel to Brussels next week.
The US and the EU negotiators were due to hold a second round of talks from Monday to Thursday. They will reschedule the discussions once the stalemate is over at the US Congress.
EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said in a statement that the cancellation of the meetings will not distract the EU from its overall aim of achieving an ambitious trade and investment pact.
Both sides have been making efforts to reach a deal on a free trade zone by the end of 2014. It will account for nearly half of the world's Gross Domestic Product.
