If not extended, import tax on beef will increase to 50%, and the tax on raw cheese will increase from 0% to 35%.
Tariffs on approximately 400 agricultural and food products imported into Japan could be higher if the bill to temporarily extend the tariffs is postponed due to the general election scheduled for February 8th.
If the Japanese Parliament fails to extend the temporary tariffs in time – which are set to expire at the end of March 2026 – importers will have to pay higher taxes, which could put upward pressure on consumer prices.
The Japanese government applies temporary tariffs for a limited period to protect domestic industries and help maintain a stable supply through imports. The Japanese Ministry of Finance stated that, of the 412 items whose temporary tariffs are about to expire, it plans to extend them for another year for 404 items.
If these temporary tariffs expire, the tariff on beef imported into Japan will increase from 38.5% to 50%, and the tariff on cheese used as an ingredient will increase from 0% to 35%.
