HAVANA, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Cubans can now import electrical appliances for personal use under a new customs regulation, the country's official gazette said on Monday.

The list of items that can be imported include air conditioners and electric stoves, on the condition that each unit weighs less than one ton and the energy consumption is below 1,500 watts.

Refrigerators, freezers, fryers, water heaters, irons, toasters and microwave ovens could also be imported as long as their energy consumption is below 2,000 watts.

Besides, Cubans can also import electric mopeds with the maximum speed below 32 miles per hour (51 km per hour) and the engine capacity below 1,000 watts.

However, those items cannot be for resale, and each person is only allowed to have two of each item, according to the new regulation.

Cuba banned the importation of such products eight years ago due to severe energy shortage.

As the country's energy security has improved in recent years, it is necessary to increase the availability of such appliances for more people in the country, the gazette said.
