SHANGHAI - China has imposed duties on imports of some U.S.-made vehicles, claiming damage from foreign automakers due to dumping and subsidies in the latest round of trade friction between the two countries. The Commerce Ministry said Wednesday that the duties would be imposed for two years on imported cars and sport utility vehicles with engine displacements of over 2.5 litres. The duties range from 2 per cent to 21.5 per cent.

OTTAWA (Reuters) — Canada and Japan have agreed to decide soon whether to negotiate a bilateral economic partnership agreement, and Canada also aims to complete a free trade agreement with India by 2013, government officials said on Wednesday. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda agreed in a phone call late on Tuesday night to complete a joint study in the near future on the feasibility of an economic partnership deal, Harper spokesman Andrew MacDougall said. The two countries launched the study in March.

India's Ujal Singh Bhatia and Thomas R Graham from the US have been appointed new members of the appellate body of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The Appellate Body is responsible for hearing appeals of WTO panel reports. It is composed of seven members, each appointed for a four-year term, with a possibility to be reappointed once.

(Reuters) - Ten years after joining the World Trade Organization, China still does not fully embrace many fundamental free market principles of the global trade body, the U.S. Trade Representative's office said on Monday in an annual report to Congress. "In 2011, the prevalence of interventionist policies and practices, coupled with the large role of state-owned enterprises in China's economy, continued to generate significant concerns among U.S. stakeholders," the USTR said.
