MANILA – The Philippines is slapping higher tariffs on Turkish flour for five years after ruling that Ankara had been dumping cheap flour in the country. In a decision dated November 11, the Tariff Commission imposed anti-dumping duties of as much as 16.19 percent on Turkish flour. The additional tariff on shipments made by 17 Turkish exporters will be in place for five years. In imposing the anti-dumping measure, the Commission said its investigation showed that “the threat of material injury to the domestic industry of such imports is imminent.”

India and the US have resolved their disagreements on food security issues, paving the way for the implementation of a global trade pact. The deal to simplify trade procedures was done at a World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting summit in Bali in Indonesia last year. But India has been blocking implementation of that agreement. It wanted assurances that its food security programme would not be challenged under the WTO's rules.

HCM CITY (VNS) — Vietnamese export firms need to improve their awareness and preparations to cope with the World Trade Organisation's trade defence that allows importing countries to take action against exporting nations, a senior official said.

The Korean government and financial institutions are planning to more than double the ratio of yuan-based trade settlements next year after the conclusion of the Korea-China FTA. The government’s long-term plan is to raise the ratio to at least 20 percent. The ratio was just 1.2 percent last year, when Korea recorded a trade value of US$228.8 billion with China.

(Reuters) - India and the United States settled a dispute on Thursday that had paralysed the World Trade Organization and risked derailing a $1 trillion package of reforms of global customs procedures. The deal, which needs to be backed by all 160 WTO members, has resurrected hopes that the trade body can now push through those reforms, opening the way up for further negotiations.

HA NOI (VNS)  — Viet Nam's tra fish exporters should expand their market to Canada to avoid a state of dependence on existing key export markets, experts said. According to Viet Nam's General Department of Customs, the value of the country's tra fish exports to Canada in the first nine months of 2014 reached US$28.9 million, a 4.5-per cent year-on-year increase. The price of frozen Vietnamese tra fish exports to Canada likewise surged compared with that of last year, the customs department said.

As had been expected, the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Meeting in Beijing agreed on November 11 to establish a roadmap towards an eventual realization of the proposed Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP). The vision for the FTAAP was first set out in 2004, but it was in 2010 in Japan and again in Bali in 2013 that APEC Leaders proposed the FTAAP as a comprehensive, high quality agreement that would build on existing regional trade agreement (RTA) and bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) talks in the Asia Pacific.

HCMC – The Vietnam Competition Authority (VCA) has warned India may launch a probe into the possible dumping of Vietnamese rubber on its market. VCA cited Indian news agency IANS as saying in September of this year that producers in India proposed their government impose an anti-dumping duty or increasing import tax on rubber.

Leading international trade experts from the EU and Vietnam staged a seminar on November 11 in the southern province Binh Duong discussing fair trade practices and protection measures. The seminar, co-organised by the European Trade Policy and Investment Support Project (EU-MUTRAP) and the Vietnam Competition Authority (VCA), addressed anti-dumping, anti-subsidy and dispute resolution, among others issues.

Nov 12 (Reuters) - Canadian Solar Inc's quarterly profit rose more than four-fold as its shift in focus from panel sales to the more profitable business of building solar power plants pays off. The company's share rose 8 percent in light trading before the bell. The company said it sold five utility-scale solar power projects in Canada in the third quarter ended Sept. 30.
