GENEVA: The US has come up with a new WTO proposal to find a permanent solution to food stockpiling after the earlier one was contested by the so-called Group of 33 countries, including India.  In the second dedicated session this year to clinch a deal to the factious issue of food stockpiling, the Geneva-based World Trade Organisation (WTO) saw the G-33 rejecting a proposal by the US which comprises three main elements.

Taiwan will never be allowed into the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement until it removes restrictions on the import of US beef and pork, a conference on US-Taiwan relations was told on Friday. “It would be difficult to exaggerate the importance of agricultural issues, especially beef and pork, to [US] Congressional House and Senate attitudes about the TPP,” analyst Chris Nelson said.

Participation in free trade agreements (FTAs) will help Vietnam improve its market economic institutions, boost both domestic and foreign investment and increase competitiveness, stated Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Quoc Khanh. 

SYDNEY -- New Zealand Prime Minister John Key will push for an early end to the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations during his upcoming trip to Japan, as part of a drive toward greater economic integration within the Asia-Pacific. Key will visit Japan for the first time since 2012 on Tuesday and Wednesday. His spokesperson said the trip will be an opportunity for New Zealand and Japan to deepen economic ties and contribute to a high level of economic integration in the region.

Algeria may submit its World Trade Organization (WTO) accession file to the 10th WTO ministerial conference to be he held next December in Kenya, said Tuesday in Algiers Minister of Commerce, Amara Benyounes. “If the accession dossier will be ready, we will submit at the coming ministerial conference of the WTO, otherwise it will be for next year,” the minister told the press on the sidelines of a meeting of the National Commission in charge of the negotiations for Algeria’s accession to WTO.

(Reuters) - Japanese Economy Minister Akira Amari said on Friday it would be difficult to reach an agreement in two-way trade talks between Japan and the United States unless U.S. lawmakers fast-tracked trade promotion legislation. The two countries have been working toward an agreement over access to agriculture and auto markets and a bilateral deal between them is considered key to a 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal.

HA NOI  (VNS) — Viet Nam has won a contract to supply 300,000 metric tonnes (MT) of rice to the Philippines this year. Deputy Chairman of the Viet Nam Food Association Pham Van Bay revealed this yesterday. In a phone interview with BusinessWorld, Administrator of the Philippines's National Food Authority (NFA) Renan B Dalisay said that Viet Nam has won the contract to supply 150,000MT each of the 15 per cent and 25 per cent broken rice.
