The EU's Trade Commissioner has said she is certain that the EU will reach a free trade agreement with the UK, despite a number of pre-conditions being placed on negotiations starting.

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said: "It's uncharted territory but I'm sure we will solve it. We will have a free trade agreement, that is for sure." UK Prime Minister Theresa May has previously said that she would be prepared to walk away from Brexit talks without securing a free trade deal with the EU if the terms were unfavorable for the UK.

At the end of March, she invoked Article 50, triggering the formal two-year Brexit process, and has said she favors a "hard Brexit," which would involve the UK leaving the EU Single Market.
