Vietnam's export situation to Indonesia

  • Export value

Indonesia is considered one of Viet Nam’s important and highly promising export markets. Over the past five years, Viet Nam’s exports to Indonesia have grown strongly, rising from USD 2.82 billion in 2020 to USD 5.74 billion in 2025, with an average growth rate of 14.5% per year, significantly higher than the average growth rate of Viet Nam’s exports to the world over the same period, which was 9.2%.

Notably, despite the global trade downturn in 2023, Viet Nam’s exports to Indonesia still increased by more than 12%, while Viet Nam’s overall exports to the world declined by nearly 5%. This not only reflects stable demand in the Indonesian market but also to some extent demonstrates the suitability and competitiveness of Vietnamese goods in that market. However, in 2025, Viet Nam’s exports to Indonesia witnessed a minor contraction of 7.3%, falling to USD 5.74 billion. This decline was mainly associated with Indonesia’s implementation of import restrictions on agricultural products and essential raw materials, which narrowed export opportunities for Vietnamese goods.

Although Viet Nam’s exports to Indonesia have grown strongly, they are still rather modest relative to the market's potential. Specifically, Viet Nam’s exports to Indonesia in 2025 accounted for only 1.2% of Viet Nam’s total exports and about 2.4% of Indonesia's total import value. Therefore, there remains substantial room to further promote Viet Nam’s exports to the Indonesian market.

  • Major Export Products and Market Shares

Viet Nam’s exports to Indonesia are quite diverse, including machinery and equipment, plastics, textile products, footwear, iron and steel, wood products, and paper products. Among the top export products, Viet Nam ranks among the five largest suppliers to Indonesia for 6 out of 10 product groups and holds relatively notable shares in Indonesia's imports of those products. Specifically, Viet Nam accounts for 30.38% of Indonesia's imports in footwear, 13.97% in knitted or crocheted fabrics, 34.65% in wood, and 10.42% in paper and paperboard articles.

In industrial product groups such as electrical machinery and equipment, mechanical machinery, transport equipment, and iron and steel, Viet Nam’s market share remains fairly limited. The main reason is intense competition from major rivals such as China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the United States, which enjoy superior advantages in technology, production scale, product quality, and the ability to build efficient supply chains.
