Indonesia, Australia resumes livestock trade
11/07/2011 145JAKARTA, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia and Australia have resumed livestock trade after Australia lifted ban on live cattle export to Indonesia, local media reported on Friday.
Dayan Antoni, the coordinator at Indonesian Beef Produce and Feeder Association (Apfindo), said that the agreement to resume the livestock export was reached in a meeting between officials at the association and their Australian counterparts.
The meeting was a quick response to the revocation of Australian government's suspension on live cattle export to Indonesia on Thursday.
"Responding to the revocation of cattle export ban, officials in the industry from Indonesia and Australia had agreed to resume the cattle trade under certain conditions,” Dayan was quoted by the detik.com as saying.
Dayan said that the cattle trade resumption requires tight audit on Indonesian slaughter houses, adding that during the initial period there will be 34 Indonesian slaughter houses licensed to process Australian cattle. He said that there will be another 41 slaughter houses licensed to do so.
Australian imposed ban on live cattle export following exposure of animal cruelty in Indonesian slaughter houses.
