(VOVworld) – Former World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Pascal Lamy says the organization recognizes Vietnam for implementing its commitments on trade liberalization.

Lamy made the remark at a meeting Monday in Hanoi with Vietnamese enterprises, an event hosted by the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI). 

VCCI Chairman Vu Tien Loc said Vietnam’s economy has developed significantly since it became a WTO member in 2007.

Lamy, who signed Vietnam's accession to the WTO in 2006, said added value is a trend of the current economic and trade negotiation process. Lamy said the current tendency of trade agreements is to protect consumers rather than producers. He advised Vietnam to adopt consistent laws to protect consumers and monitor the quality of food products. Lamy noted that as an ASEAN member, Vietnam should make its regulations and administrative measures consistent with international standards to close gaps in the management of bilateral, multilateral, and regional trade relations.
