Viet Nam's TPI approved for dual irradiation of U.S.-bound fruit
08/07/2026 6Toan Phat Irradiation Plant (TPI) in Tay Ninh Province has become the first facility in Viet Nam authorised by the United States to operate both gamma and X-ray irradiation technologies for phytosanitary treatment of fresh fruit bound for the U.S. market.
The approval comes from the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), which cleared TPI to use X-ray technology alongside its existing gamma irradiation system using Cobalt-60. No other facility in Viet Nam currently holds authorisation for both technologies in parallel for fruit exports to the United States.
Viet Nam's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment says the additional approval gives exporters greater operational flexibility, particularly during peak harvest periods when demand for quarantine treatment rises sharply.
TPI processed nearly 5,670 tons of fresh fruit for the U.S. market using gamma irradiation in 2025. The company says the introduction of X-ray technology could nearly double the plant's processing capacity, helping accommodate growing export volumes.
The approval arrives as Viet Nam's fruit and vegetable exports continue to expand. According to the Viet Nam Fruit and Vegetables Association, exports reached a record USD 8.5 billion in 2025, with shipments to the United States rising more than 50 per cent year on year to around USD 547 million.
Despite that growth, data from the United States International Trade Commission shows Viet Nam accounted for only about 1.49 per cent of US imports of fruit, vegetables and processed products during the first ten months of 2025.
