The EU may soon resume the ratification process for a trade agreement with the US

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said the European Union (EU) is likely to continue working on a trade agreement with the United States, after US President Donald Trump withdrew his threat to impose tariffs related to the attempt to buy Greenland.
President Roberta Metsola expressed satisfaction at seeing that the escalating tensions had temporarily eased. She said this meant the EU could resume internal discussions on a trade agreement with the US.
Earlier this week, the EP decided to suspend work related to the trade agreement with the US due to new tariff threats from President Donald Trump.
The European Parliament (EP) is discussing legal proposals to lift many EU import tariffs on US goods. This is a key part of the agreement reached in Turnberry, Scotland, at the end of July, as well as maintaining zero tariffs on US lobster – a point initially agreed upon with Mr. Trump in 2020. These proposals require approval from the EP and the governments of EU member states.
Many lawmakers have complained that the trade agreement lacks balance, as the EU is forced to cut most import tariffs while the US maintains a general tariff rate of 15%. However, lawmakers previously seemed willing to accept the agreement but with conditions attached, such as an 18-month expiration clause and measures to address potential surges in US imports.
The EP's Trade Committee had previously scheduled a vote on the agreement for January 26-27. Metsola said lawmakers are now optimistic that discussions can resume soon to get the process back on track.
