Viet Nam has ample room to accelerate its online exports.
19/12/2025 144Viet Nam's e-commerce is experiencing strong growth, but online exports remain modest; the period from 2026 to 2030 is expected to create a boost to accelerate growth and elevate the status of Vietnamese goods.
The national e-commerce development master plan for the period 2026-2030 has set the goal that by 2030, online exports will become the main channel to enhance the value of Vietnamese brands, contributing to increasing the rate of cross-border B2C e-commerce, adding value to agricultural, aquatic, industrial and processed products, and simultaneously improving the digital competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises.
To achieve this goal, at the Cross-Border E-commerce Forum, experts suggested that businesses need to focus resources and implement a systematic approach from production to platform operation for sustainable development.
E-commerce in Viet Nam is projected to grow by over 25% in 2025, reaching a market size of $31 billion and accounting for approximately 10% of total retail sales of goods and consumer services. Despite this, exports via e-commerce have only reached $1.7 billion, while imports have exceeded $2 billion.
Experts attribute the significant difference in growth rates to a shortage of high-quality human resources and limited understanding of e-commerce import regulations in foreign markets.
However, the period from 2026 to 2030 is considered a crucial time for Viet Nam to aim towards becoming a regional e-commerce export hub, especially since the E-commerce Law has just been passed by the National Assembly , adding new regulations on managing cross-border platforms.
To seize this opportunity, experts recommend that businesses prepare thoroughly in terms of legal aspects and risk management, and prepare all necessary legal documents for export, including commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, and certificates of origin.
