Norway and China are today (May 20) set to sign agreements on market access for Norwegian salmon, fishmeal and oil, the Norwegian government has announced.

Coinciding with a visit to Norway from China's veterinary and customs minister, the agreement on salmon is the renewal of a protocol first signed in 2017. This agreement lasts for two years at a time.

The two countries have also come to an agreement on fishmeal and oil, securing Norwegian market access in China, the government added. "There is great interest in trading such goods, both from Norwegian and Chinese players," it said.

"China is one of our biggest growth markets," said Norwegian fisheries minister Harald Nesvik. "These agreements are important for Norwegian seafood companies."

"The increase in seafood consumption in China is greater than the annual production in Norway. It says a bit about how important this country is."
