After receiving recent positive feedback from plenty of Japanese consumers, Vietnamese lychees are expected to expand their market share in Japan in the near future.

Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, deputy director of the Export Promotion Centre under the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade), said the recent shipments of Thanh Ha lychees to Japan have been successfully conducted through Red Dragon Company. This comes after an online trade exchange was held on June 2 on both Vietnamese and Japanese agricultural and food products.

Thuy said that these batches of lychees have been labelled by Vietrade with the itrace247 origin tracing stamp, a move which will help Japanese consumers to gain greater insights into Vietnamese lychees through their cultivation, harvest, and post-harvest stages.

She went on to reveal that Japanese importers also remain keen to import sugarcane, green mangoes, coconuts, and fresh lemongrass from the Vietnamese market.

According to details given by Vietnam’s Trade Office in Japan, approximately 1,000 tonnes of fresh lychees will be exported to Japan over the course of this year.

Along with Japanese supermarket chains, several Vietnamese-owned businesses and stores have imported local lychees and have either sold them directly or via online platforms to the Vietnamese community based in Japan.

Ta Duc Minh, Vietnamese trade counselor in Japan, underlined the importance of securing the Japanese market in both a long-term and sustainable manner due to this demanding market outlining a range of stringent regulations regarding growing areas, lychee varieties, and pesticide levels.

Minh went on to emphasise the need to have synchronous linkages from cultivation, processing, preservation, transportation and export activities in order ensure that fresh lychees are kept at their freshest, thereby maintaining their brand and market shares.

He also revealed that the Vietnamese Trade Office in Japan will co-ordinate efforts alongside Vietrade and supermarket chains in Japan in the near future to organise trade promotion events that can help to introduce Vietnamese lychees to more Japanese customers.
