SINGAPORE, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- A senior trade official of Singapore on Wednesday called for the World Trade Organization (WTO) to explore new ways to overcome issues causing a logjam in the Doha round of trade talks.

Speaking at a dialogue session here, Singapore's Minister of State for Trade and Industry Lee Yi Shyan asked if there was a need to scale down the complexity of trade negotiations by reducing the number of issues.

Talks over the Doha Developmental Agenda have been deadlocked for ten years.

Lee said it was critical to resolve this because the world is at a point where the threat of another economic recession, with a debt crisis in the eurozone and a weakening United States economy, may lead to a resurgence of protectionist tendencies.

Concluding the trade talks would have provided a much needed stimulus package for the global economy, he said.

The dialogue gathers officials from the WTO Secretariat and senior trade officials and experts from the region.
