Do FTAs replace other trade-related agreements that Vietnam already has?

Question: Do FTAs replace other trade-related agreements that Vietnam already has?

Answer:

Regarding trade and investment, with each FTA Partner, Vietnam not only has an agreement in the FTA but can also have many other agreements, for example:

  • Agreements on trade and investment protection
  • Agreement to avoid double taxation
  • Customs cooperation and mutual assistance agreement
  • Common Agreements and Conventions that both Vietnam and FTA Partners are members of

In principle, when Vietnam signs and implements an FTA with a Partner, other agreements (Treaties, Agreements...) that already exist between Vietnam and that Partner continue to be in effect. These existing agreements will only terminate or change their effectiveness if the FTA has regulations clearly stating this issue.
