The EU wants to promote the relationship with Vietnam and other ASEAN nations, among those, Vietnam is the one which signed the most agreements and co-operation programs with the EU and had the highest number of students studying in the union. 

Vietnam will make the best efforts to put the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and Investment Protection Agreement (IPA) into practice, said Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc while hosting the outgoing Head of Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam Bruno Angelet, who came to bid farewell on August 2, the Government Portal reported.

The PM lauded Ambassador Angelet’s positive contributions to promoting and deepening the friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and the EU, especially the signing of the two aforesaid agreements in June.

Phuc acknowledged that the agreements will bring more benefits to Vietnam as bilateral trade turnover reached over US$56 billion in 2018 and European businesses have had more than 2,000 investment projects worth US$25 billion in Vietnam.

Regarding some issues of concern to the EU, including labor, sustainable development, fishery, forestry, protection of investors and enterprises’ interest, among others, Phuc suggested the two sides continue negotiating and affirmed that Vietnam will implement the commitments drastically and effectively.

Phuc also expressed his desire that Vietnam and the EU will work closely during the former’s tenures as the chair of ASEAN in 2020 and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2020-2021.

For his part, Bruno Angelet said his tenure in Vietnam is the most memorable time in his diplomacy career as he has witnessed huge positive changes of the country.
